On the Scene
A little bit of this.. A little bit of that...

Many attribute the origination of the Lowrider to the zoot-suit fashion that bloomed heavily through Los Angeles during the 1930's along Whittier Blvd. The truth lies further south and east of the sunshine state. Sources indicate strongly that the pachuco (a style originated from the actor Tin-Tin) originated in Ciudad Juarez, Mexico. This pachuco also introduced the world to the LowRider. The term Lowrider was coined when these youth “rebels” began “bagging” their vehicles by stuffing sand bags in the trunks of their cars. This trend emerged as soldiers returning from the World War used the knowledge they received in hydraulics by introducing the components into vehicles. This was the start of the Lowrider movement, of combining passion and art into the largest piece of machinery most will ever own. This movement has then spawned other modification numerous to vehicles (suicide doors/ engine swaps/ pinstriping/ suede interiors/ full audio/ video systems/ cambered suspension), all of which have allowed the owner to pour his essence into his mode of transportation.
Enter Gilbert Ramos, and his tuner 350Z. This gentleman is one of those hard working individuals that puts his own hard earned money into his passion. He has strived to convey his love for the industry through a very unique Nissan platform, dubbed The Mirage. Mr Ramos not only competes in major Car Show circuits such as HIN, DUB, and IFO from Houston to Los Angeles, he has affinity with showing his rolling artwork at local benefits. He stated that he receives a lot of joy telling young kids about his vehicle and why he decided on the new look. A look that is the first of its kind for the 350Z tuner movement. Gilbert decided to look at the past Lowriders for inspiration on his new paint job. He then gave the reigns to Albert Sepulvedaof Albert’s Custom Paint in El Paso to transform the once orange and black bagged Z, to the masterpiece it is now.
Abert used a colorful pallet of House of Kolor tints to finish with a one-of-a-kind custom paint job. When it came down to putting his skills on the Nissan metal canvas, he wanted to create a Masterpiece using his original technique of multi pattern designs. To this date, this type of “lowrider” artform has not been applied to any other 350/370 Z. Albert stated that his mind started drifting, and visualized a Mirage when he was developing the concept. A Mirage, Albert stated “is something your imagination tells you is there, but will never see again.” And hence, the name for Gilbert’s car was born. Albert used House of Kolor (HoK) Shimmer White flake as a base with Ice Pearls, then enveloped HoK Kandies Tangerine and Magenta. He then completed the work with SEM Color Horizons Candies: Royal Blue and Sun Dance Yellow.
The photos were taken at “Cruise the Grid” meet in El Paso, minutes after Gilbert left his hard working job. “Cruise the Grid” is a “Cars & Coffee” type meet which has provided a great weekly venue to enthusiasts in the El Paso area on Wednesday & Sunday Nights. In addition to providing a place for owners to display their vehicular creations, they also have raised funds for the Community; Reach for the Star- terminally ill children, Breast Cancer Society, Trade a Toy for a Smile. We hope to see more exposure from “Cruise the Grid”, and look forward to trends emanating from the southwest.
